In the book, the author makes the claim that the root causes of why kids as early as kindergarten can't handle sitting in a classroom, become violent, and cause other forms of trouble are distilled down to simple reasoning; Kids can't handle sitting in a classroom for long periods of time and they're being exposed to things like national politics, racism, homophobia, white supremacy, police brutality, and a list of other negative issues.In the classrooms I've taught, the so called troublemaker isn't always the same student, day after day. One day it's "Joe", next day it's "Jane"; some days it no one. The reasons for their trouble causing is not always obvious. It can be due to one simple reason or a dozen different reasons that start with something trauma related at home and branch out into other forms of negative behaviors. Sometimes it's cry for help.She goes onto to mention that taking kids out of the classroom to see a social worker is a bad thing too because it takes away their learning time in the classroom... Does the author understand that maybe what the child actually needs at that moment is to be out the classroom and in a social worker's office to talk about what they're dealing with? Some kids are dealing with things like their parents getting divorced or physical/emotional abuse in their own home.Freedom is another issue that she says kids aren't getting in the classroom. Well, some kids don't have structure at home, that is, mom is at work, dad is out of the picture (or at work), so there's no family structure or bond; they're free to run around the streets with no adult supervision. Why is it any surprise then theses kids get into trouble in class for running around the room or worse, rioting or getting into fights at the local mall when they lack structure and/or decent role-models?While we can certainly learn things from our students, our students can learn things from us as well. Instead of blaming the current president for our troubled kids and promoting freedom in the sense of pulling someone away from a police officer who's being arrested . Why don't we teach that with education, understanding, and acceptance that can pave the road to the real freedom they're looking for?I'm actually returning this book for a refund.

My undergraduate degree is in education and child studies and my masters is in special education. I've read a lot of books about education. This is the most important book I've ever read. I believe every teacher should read this book. I believe ever human should read this book."...classroom management is not a technical or mechanical skill; it is deeply relational, human work...I propose that we be love."
